Downs aim to stretch lead and edge closer to another title

The clock is winding down, and the Betway Premiership has reached a final stretch, with four games remaining until the end of what has been an exciting season in the two-horse league title race between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns are currently sitting with a two-point lead ahead of Pirates and will want to increase the gap to five points when they host Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium today at 3pm.

The Brazilians will be facing Rise and Shine in a space of four days, following their hard-fought and “lucky” 1-0 win in Seshego midweek.

“Sometimes we are lucky, but of course, in the end, we have a purpose. Sometimes things take longer, and when they work out, you may look like the best coach in the world. The reality is that you are going to need everybody at the end of the championship,” Miguel Cardoso said.

“We have another game against Polokwane this weekend, and surely it will be another tough one.”

Maybe it will not be as tough this time around, as they will be playing in front of their home crowd, but Polokwane City have proven time and time again this season that they are a tough nut to crack against the big teams.

Cardoso and his side will then brace themselves for another tricky assignment against a wounded Kaizer Chiefs in Tshwane on Wednesday.

Amakhosi suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to Siwelele midweek, a result that ultimately ended their seven-game winning streak. The Glamour Boys will be determined to get a positive result, as they are still in pursuit of finishing third and returning to play continental football next season.

But one supposes that Sundowns will not in any form or way easy for Amakhosi, as they are now close to clinching their ninth league title in a row and setting another unprecedented record for consecutive league victories.

Pirates, on the other hand, will travel to Cape Town, where they will face Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday night and return to winning ways after a 1-1 Soweto derby stalemate.

The Buccaneers last tasted league glory in 2012 and have never gotten this close to the league title like they are this time around and will just hope Sundowns slip up in these last rounds of matches.
