Fat Cats Athletic Club hosts successful race

South Africa’s fastest-growing road running club, Fat Cats Athletic Club, successfully hosted its fourth annual Fat Cats 10K Race at the Mall of Africa, Waterfall Park on Sunday.

The race, affectionately known as #theraceforthewholefamily, attracted about 2 000 runners, both professional and social. The runners took part in 10km and 5km races, as well as the family oriented Kitten Miler and Nappy Dash that cater for kids and pets.

Taung-born Nicholas Seoposengwe, 21, won the 10km race with a time of 30:54. “I’m glad I won the Fat Cats 10k race. I am hoping to finish the year stronger after winning my biggest race a few weeks ago, which is the Absa Run Your City race,” said Seoposengwe.

Marelise Retief, 36, came top in the female category with a finishing time of 38 minutes and 37 seconds. This was her second win in 24 hours after clinching the Chamberlain Capital Classic in Pretoria the previous day.

“I held back a bit yesterday [Saturday] in Pretoria because I wanted to win the Fat Cats 10k race. I’m glad that my body responded well and I enjoyed the run. My next big thing now will be the Kaapsehoop Marathon in November,” said Retief.

Director at Fat Cats Athletic Race Channelle van Wyk said the club is excited about the success of the race.

“We are excited that finally, we went back and ran the streets. Many people heeded our call to register as families. I also saw a couple of family pets also pounding the streets with their pets. That is the spirit we like seeing at our events as our values are very much around the family,” said Van Wyk.
