This is South Africa’s time, says Proteas legend Allan Donald

Former Proteas star bowler Allan Donald is oozing with confidence. And he says the time is now for South Africa to finally deliver the unprecedented cricket World Cup trophy.

The Proteas are one step away from achieving that feat. This after making history by reaching their first-ever T20 World Cup final.

They booked the final spot in style when they blew Afghanistan away by nine wickets during their semi-final encounter. It happened at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday morning.

Completed one of their easiest run chases

Coach Rob Walter’s men bowled their surprised opponents all out for just 56 runs on the scoreboard to complete one of their easiest run chases.

Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram saw them home with a 55-run second-wicket partnership. They led the team to 60 for one in 8.5 overs.

Donald spoke to the media during the unveiling of the South African Champions team that will participate in the inaugural World Cricket Legends tournament in England on July 3.

“Like any players game or knockout game, South Africa have proven to be a conditioned team. This they showed through the tight matches that they have played so far at the World Cup,” Donald said on Thursday.

“And pitches over there in the US and the Caribbean have been tough to play on. But they have managed to grind the results.

Well-conditioned team

“So, plain and simple, I think this is South Africa’s time [to win the World Cup]. They have battled hard and won close games. And almost every single game that they won was through fine margins. They are now a well-conditioned team.

“It’s a World Cup, and anyone can beat anyone. But it’s just a matter of minimising mistakes whenever they come along. And South Africa has found a way in this T20 World Cup.

“Every single time, someone has made a breakthrough or scored some crucial runs. And because of that, I think it is South Africa’s time.”

The Proteas will either face India or England in the final on Saturday afternoon. India and England will play their semi-final final clash on Thursday at 4:30pm (SA time).
