Bafana coach Hugo Broos names preliminary squad

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 36-member preliminary squad for the international friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo next month.

Last week, Safa CEO Lydia Monyepao confirmed that the South African senior men’s national team will play friendly international matches as preparations for the upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup and for Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast in January.

“These matches are in support of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos as he continues with his preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in the beginning of next year, and the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November this year,” Monyepao was quoted on the Safa website.

Broos’ charges host Namibia on September 9 at 3pm and then DR Congo on September 12 in matches that are part of the coach’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire in January next year, and for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November. The venues of the two matches will be confirmed in the coming days.

The preliminary squad will be trimmed to 23 players next week when Broos announces his final list for the two matches.

The 2026 Fifa World Cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. The World Cup qualifiers will start in November this year and wrap up in 2025. The Africa Cup of Nations will be held from January 13 – February 11 in 2024.
