Banyana’s Kgatlana set to earn R10m in lucrative move to Tigres

Banyana Banyana star Thembi Kgatlana is reportedly set to earn a staggering annual salary estimated to be $550,000 [R10-million] at Liga MX UANL Tigres.

Parting ways with Racing Louisville

This after women’s sports news outlet  Centre Circle announced on Wednesday night that US’s Racing Louisville have parted ways with the Banyana captain. She has now joined the Mexican giants Tigres on a three-year deal.

Kgatlana spent only one season in the US, where she featured in 16 matches. She also  scored two goals and provided one assist for Racing Louisville.

“Naturally, we are disappointed to lose such a talented player who is a great presence in our locker room, but we had extensive discussions with Thembi and completely respected her desire for this move. This is a life-changing opportunity for her and her family,”   said Racing Louisville in a statement.

Most expensive female recruit on the continent

The big money move makes Kgatlana the most expensive recruit in the history of the Liga MX Femenil. It also makes her the most expensive African women footballer of all time.

The 27-year-old joins fellow South African forward Jermaine Seoposenwe in Mexico, where she is on the books of FC Monterrey.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to join one of the best supported clubs in the world, where success is deeply engrained in the fabric of the club,” said Kgatlana.

“I want to help Tigres win yet more trophies and make history during my time in Mexico. Liga MX has shown over recent years that it is quickly becoming one of the strongest leagues in women’s football — African stars like Jermaine and Osinachi Ohale are already there, as well as other world-class players like Jenni Hermoso.

Opportunity of a lifetime

“While I never planned to leave NWSL so soon, Tigres have pursued me for a long time and were eventually able to make a deal with Racing.

“I could not pass up the chance to make a move to a club with such high ambitions to be among the very best in women’s football. I must thank Racing for allowing me this move.

“I have only positive things to say about the club and the people of Louisville who stood by me in my toughest moments. It is only thanks to them that I was able to perform at the World Cup this summer.

“My stay was shorter than planned but I will never forget the love and kindness shown to me. A new adventure awaits, and I can’t wait to get started in my new colours.”
