Gunners going for historic double

On Saturday, Arsenal will be looking to rewrite the history books and complete what will be their best season ever when they go up against Paris Saint-German (PSG) in the final of the Uefa Champions League at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

The Gunners have just ended a 22-year league title drought after they won the English Premier League following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth FC.

Against PSG, Arsenal will be looking to grab the double and also their first Champions League gold medal.

Coach Mikel Arteta will be buoyed by the fact that they have not lost a single match in the Champions League since the tournament started. And nine teams have lifted the trophy without suffering defeat across the whole season in the Champions League era. Will Arsenal join the list?

Arsenal are yet to taste defeat in the 14 Champions League matches this season, giving them a chance to join an exclusive list of clubs who have completed a trophy-lifting European campaign without suffering a defeat.

Nine teams have achieved the feat in the Champions League with a further seven managing it in the European Cup era. However, Arsenal’s landmark would be particularly impressive as the most matches a side has previously navigated unbeaten is 13 – the minimum number of games to win the competition since the introduction of the inaugural league phase in 2024/25 is 15 and Arsenal would be the first to do it under the current system.

Holders PSG are bidding to become only the second club in the Champions League era to successfully defend their title after Real Madrid, who won three in a row between 2016 and 2018.

For PSG, only one club has won back-to-back titles in the Champions League era, but Paris have the chance to match that achievement in 2025/26. As they gear up to play Arsenal, the Frenchmen are hoping to become only the second side to defend the title in the Champions League era.

Real Madrid became the first club to complete back-to-back Champions League title wins in 2017, and they repeated the feat 12 months later for good measure.
