Motlanthe jumps Safa’s ship

In news that will shock the SA soccer fraternity, the South African Football Association (Safa) CEO Tebogo Motlanthe resigned from the football mother body on Friday night.

Motlanthe’s sudden resignation came as a shock to the national association and it is believed that Safa and its president Danny Jordaan have not accepted his resignation.

Safa National Executive Committee (NEC) members confirmed the news to Sunday World and said that this has left the association in tatters.

Motlanthe, who has served Safa for many years in its legal department, was appointed CEO in 2021 following the ousting of Gay Mokoena who had a fallout with the Safa bosses.

Before Mokoena, Russell Paul was in charge until he left the association and went for greener pastures in the Middle East. Dennis Mumble was in the office before Paul and he also had a spectacular fallout with Jordaan.

After Motlanthe’s resignation, Safa NEC members convened an urgent Zoom meeting to discus the matter and to try and convince Motlanthe to reconsider his decision.

Motlanthe was seen as the golden body who was tasked to steady the Safa creaking ship. His job was commendable and he was also in charge of the staff retrenchments that went well.

He was also involved in the club licensing that resulted in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) boycotting a Safa congress in Ekurhuleni two weeks ago.

The PSL are Safa’s special member and they run they run the professional body of football in the country.

Motlanthe was not available to elaborate on the matter and promised to return our calls later.

This is a developing story.
