The euphoria surrounding the Nedbank Cup may have died down a little, following the ousting of the big three from the tournament, but the dark horses that are remaining, are going full throttle with their preparations for the semi-finals this coming weekend.
On Saturday, Durban City will host Casric Stars at the Chattsworth Stadium at 3:00pm with TS Galaxy welcoming Milford FC at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Kwa-Mhlanga the following day on Sunday.
PSL giants Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns were bundled out of the competition in the early rounds, leaving sponsors scrambling to keep the tournament alive and topical. And now, the tournament is as open as a kasi shisanyima and the remaining four teams are fancying their chances of lifting the holy grail.
The Rockets, as Galaxy are affectionately known, have a slight advantage over the three other clubs. Galaxy made history in 2019 when they lifted the Ke Yona, when they were still campaigning in the national first division, the second tier of local football. They did not just win the tournament, they surprised all and sundry when they nailed Chiefs 1-0 via a Zakhele Lepasa at a jam-packed Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
However, Galaxy are still in pain and licking their wounds after they were spanked 6-0 by the Buccaneers in the Betway Premiership last Sunday. The experienced campaigners will want to exert revenge and get back to winning ways at the expense of Milford. But Milford also know what it takes to compete in this competition. A few seasons ago, they claimed the scalp of Amakhosi, knocking them out in the quarterfinals and turning them into a laughing stock.
This season, Milford also did a number of in-form Sekhukhune United in the quarterfinals, and so, they will be looking for a sequel and to show Galaxy that the gulf between the first division and the premier league is not much of a difference.
Durban City are relatively new after they bounced back into the PSL when they gained promotion for the 2025-26 season. The club was formerly known as Maritzburg United and they underwent a name change after they suffered relegation. They have acquired seasoned campaigners and on book, they are the favourites.
However, against Casric, they are up against giant killers of note. The side with the humble resources eliminated the might Pirates and AmaZulu out of the cup, in an amazing winning streak to reach the last four and they are plotting to send Galaxy into orbit on Saturday.
