The impasse between incoming Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane and the South African Football Association (Safa), which has stalled the signing of his contract, is caused by a disagreement over the coach’s image rights, his podcast and his school’s football project involvement, Sunday World can reveal.
The coach and the national association have agreed in principle on financial terms but the matter of the image rights has become a stumbling block.
Sunday World understands that Mosimane and his camp will not sign on the dotted line until the dispute is resolved.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly trainer is returning to Bafana for a second spell after Safa president Danny Jordaan announced Mosimane’s capture two weeks ago. His first tenure was from 2010 until 2012.
Mosimane has established himself as one of the most successful African coaches. His image rights have been elevated sky high and the association wants him to give them up.
The association is reportedly not paying him enough to forsake his image rights and stop him from using his identity for personal sponsorship and endorsements.
It has further emerged that part of the deadlock has also been caused by the demand to end his association with the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football and his soccer school programme because it could clash with Safa development projects.
A Safa insider has also revealed that the association wants the coach to ditch his podcast and operate within Safa’s streamlined media procedures. Mosimane launched his podcast, Changing the Game with Pitso, in June.
The name of Molefi Ntseki, a former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana coach, has been bandied about as the caretaker coach for the two matches against Guinea and Eritrea while negotiations with Mosimane go ahead.
