Sundowns hoping to redeem themselves against Polokwane City

Mamelodi Sundowns will today have an opportunity to overtake Orlando Pirates once again in their captivating cat-and-mouse chase at the top of the Betway Premiership. Sundowns, who have one match in hand compared to Pirates, are playing catch-up and will face Polokwane City at Seshego Stadium tonight at 7:30pm.

Coach Cardoso’s side squandered a great opportunity to open the gap at the top of the league standings after two draws against Stellenbosch FC last week and also against Richards Bay on Sunday.

As a result, Sundowns remain in second place, having registered 58 points after 25 matches, while the Buccaneers are leading the charts with 59 points in the 26 rounds of matches they have played. This means that Sundowns can take pole position and lead the table with two points if they are able to outsmart the stubborn Rise and Shine team.

City a tough nut to crack

The well-coached City are playing an entertaining brand of football and under coach Phuti Mohafe, they have established themselves as a tough nut to crack in the league and they may just catch Sundowns, who are running out breath, with a sucker punch that may destroy the Brazilians’ chances of defending their league title.

Workaholic right-back Khuliso Mudau says that it is very important for them to get back to winning ways after going two matches without a win. “We have played two draws in a row. It’s unlike us. There is no reserving ourselves at Sundowns; we go out to win every match. We are not putting ourselves under pressure; we are not worried about teams. We have to focus on ourselves.”

Sundowns will also play against City on Saturday at Loftus and say the two games will be very tough. “Facing them twice has challenges. Tonight they have a home ground advantage, but we intend to make both fixtures extremely difficult for them, and they still have to come to Loftus,” Mudau added.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will return to action against Siwelele FC in another Betway Premiership clash on Wednesday at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

This will be Amakhosi’s 26th match of the season, and they will be desperate to collect maximum points to continue their push to secure a CAF competition spot.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates left Chiefs in third spot on 47 points after 25 games, while the hosts, Siwelele, sit in 11th place with 29 points from the same number of matches. The Bloemfontein side also played to a goalless draw against Golden Arrows on Friday in Durban.
