Broos and Bafana will surprise many — Zuma

Former Bafana Bafana striker Sibusiso “Rhee” Zuma has put his trust in coach Hugo Broos. He says the Belgian tactician will surprise a lot of people at the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Today marks exactly four days before Bafana and Mexico set the tone for the World Cup in Mexico City, where they will meet in the opening match at Azteca Stadium, ground Broos knows very well, having played in the 1986 opener.

Zuma, who experienced the World Cup in Korea and Japan in 2002, said he was confident that the current generation has what it takes to lead Bafana out of the group stages for the first time in history. “We have a good squad; I like that it is balanced because should anything happen, he (Broos) has a clear plan B,” Zuma told Sunday World.

“It is a good team and very young as well. I am sure coach Hugo Broos will surprise a lot of people. Because if you have a player like Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] that the world does not know about and you still have someone like Oswin Appollis … those two will cause a lot of damage.

“If the team could just get behind them and make sure that everything is made easy and they don’t find themselves isolated, because at a big stage like the World Cup, as soon as they see that the two are dangerous, they will make sure that they put more bodies on them.

“They need to be backed by their teammates and in doing so, Rele and Appollis will hurt a lot of teams,” Zuma added.

After facing the co-hosts, Bafana will face a tough assignment against the Czech Republic next Thursday in Atlanta, US, before wrapping up their group stage against South Korea on June 25 in Monterrey, Mexico.
