Andile Humphry “Royal Son” Zindela, 28, is an Afrojazz and soul musician, motivator and mentor from Port Shepstone, south of Durban. While growing up, he was raped by a pastor. Depressed, Zindela, who started singing at the age of eight, attempted to commit suicide many times, but says music played a huge role in the process of healing. He now uses music to heal the youth. Zindela, who grew up in Folweni and was raised by a single mother, is an eThekwini municipality ambassador where, through a campaign called Boy Child, he motivates boys to live their best lives. “I saw a need to groom young boys, especially those without fathers and father figures like myself, as most are bitter and angry,” Zindela says. He sometimes buys and distributes groceries for needy kids. He advises: “Life is a race. We can’t all reach the finish line at the same time – your time will come.”
