Cycling is a world-renowned sport for keeping healthy and fit. It also improves the overall mental wellbeing. For this reason, Siyabonga Gwala, 22, formed a cycling team last year called SiyaRider in his neighbourhood of Southdale, south of Johannesburg. Since then, a cycling movement was born, helping to give many youngsters meaning to their lives. At the moment, Gwala’s cycling team boasts more than 20 members who enjoy taking long loops around the city, taking in sights and sounds while getting fit. Cycling has completely transformed their lives. They are hooked. Gwala also runs cycling tours of Johannesburg, exploring the city’s nooks and crannies. “I teach people how to ride a bicycle. I do fun rides, intensive rides, food tours and creative tours,” Gwala says. He dreams of grooming an even larger generation of enthusiastic, young riders. “Cycling is also a way of living and of bringing out the greatness within us. I am on a mission to change many people’s lives and bring hope to the hopeless.”
