Convicted serial insurance killer Rosemary Ndlovu has been found guilty yet again, adding another dark chapter to one of South Africa’s most chilling murder sagas.
The former police officer, already serving six life sentences for orchestrating the murders of relatives for insurance payouts, was on Wednesday convicted by the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court for incitement to commit murder.
Ndlovu was convicted alongside her co-accused, Nomsa Mudau, over a 2018 plot to murder Mudau’s husband.
“The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the conviction of former police officer Rosemary Ndlovu and her co-accused, Nomsa Mudau, by the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on charges of incitement to commit murder,” said Gauteng NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole.
Mohlatlole said the court heard that Ndlovu “contacted hitmen to assist Mudau in carrying out the murder”.
According to the NPA, investigations by Cpt Kheswa Mabunda uncovered how Ndlovu allegedly connected Mudau with the would-be killers before stepping back while the murder discussions continued.
“The court found that the state had successfully proven the alternative charge of incitement, instigation, or command of a person to commit murder,” Mohlatlole said.
The court heard that Mudau allegedly wanted her husband dead because she believed he was abusive and involved in extra-marital affairs.
During meetings in Tembisa, Mudau allegedly promised the hitmen payment after claiming insurance money following her husband’s death.
Hitmen saved murder target
But the plot collapsed after the hitmen informed the intended victim, Justice Mudau, about the alleged conspiracy.
“The hitmen later reported the plot to the intended victim, Justice Mudau, who opened a criminal case with the South African Police Service,” said Mohlatlole.
That criminal complaint led to the arrest of both women.
Senior state advocate Riana Williams argued that the State’s witnesses were credible and consistent and that the evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had attempted to orchestrate murder.
“The state argued that Ndlovu initiated the chain of events by contacting the hitmen and arranging assistance for her friend,” Mohlatlole added.
The matter was postponed to July 15 for pre-sentence reports and sentencing proceedings.
The latest conviction comes while Ndlovu is already serving six life terms imposed in 2021 after she was convicted of murdering family members and her partner to cash in on funeral and life insurance policies worth more than R1 million.
“The conviction comes as Ndlovu is already serving six life sentences following her sentencing in November 2021 for the murders of five family members,” Mohlatlole said.
