Johannesburg – The African Transformation Movement is here to bring a new kind of a politician, writes Kuli Roberts.
Ever wondered what politicians get up to when they are not trying to get your vote?
This was the question on our minds when we reached out to African Transformation Movement (ATM) leader and MP Vuyolwethu Zungula.
We discovered some interesting things about the 33-year-old bachelor, who is the head of South Africa’s threeyear- old political party.
You look like a model? Have you modelled before?
I actually have – for the 2019 election posters for the African Transformation Movement. Not as easy as it looks, that much I can tell you.
What is your favourite soccer team?
AC Milan and Orlando Pirates.
Who do you think is the hottest musician?
Yima nge [wait a moment about] musicians – Thando Thabethe.
What sports do you play?
Mostly soccer; I almost went professional in university before I got committed to serving in the Twelve Apostles Students Association.
Favourite dish to eat and cook?
Anything traditional made by Aphiwe Bilibana.
What is your favourite song?
Black Motion’s Hosanna.
What did you do on Africa Day?
I honoured an invitation from an organisation we work closely with, Not in My Name International, which launched its PanAfrican desk in Pretoria. The event was graced by many political and civil giants who are vested in seeing a change in all communities.
How do you pamper yourself?
Get off the grid; take long drives to a getaway; get a well-deserved massage and great food.
If you could meet anyone, who would it be and why?
Paul Kagame and Vladimir Putin. The way they have turned things around in their countries is truly great and commendable.
How are you coping with Covid?
Quite well. My team is hands-on, making sure I’m following all regulations and safety precautions. Though I have lost my godmother, I remain in full hope that this [the pandemic] too will be over.
Why should people vote for your party?
South Africa needs a party that will advance the needs of the people as compared to satisfying the needs of the party funders. After 27 years, it is heartbreaking to see people queuing for R350 once-off grants when they could be totally emancipated through being prioritised in their own country. The African Transformation Movement is here to bring about a new kind of politician, a servant leader.
