Dr Charity Ngoatle, who has a research interest in health literacy, says her curiosity was piqued when she learned that people who generally read do not automatically become health literate. As a result, her research focused on the “development and implementation of an educational programme to enhance health literacy on prescribed medication instructions.” Dr Ngoatle was born in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province, and relocated to Mabocha village in Burgersfort, Limpopo, where she was nurtured and attended foundation school. She studied at the University of Limpopo in 2005 for a Bachelor of Nursing Science. “I struggled so much at varsity. I couldn’t understand the lecturers because I was not good in English. I had no proper clothes, food, books and study materials. All these obstacles didn’t stop me. I completed my degree at record time and became one of the top three best students for group of 2005,” she recounts. She also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Education from Nelson Mandela University and a Master of Nursing Science from the University of Limpopo.
