With six research publications in the areas of production economics, agricultural supply response and econometric modelling of agricultural production, Dr Roy Shoko says he was taught from a very young age to continuously seek knowledge and show excellence in every area of life. “I have always had a keen interest in agriculture and how it contributes to food security and livelihoods particularly on the African continent,” says Dr Soko. Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he was raised by a single mother, Dr Shoko feels grateful. He says studying for a PhD demanded a lot of time, patience, hard work, perseverance and discipline. “The programme is rigorous and stretches you to the limit. However, it is achievable and I still believe anyone can do it. For me, the biggest challenge was finding that work, life and study balance. Time was not enough. Often; I would work under immense pressure. So, it is indeed a solitary journey, but an exciting and revealing one,” he says. He also holds MSc in Agricultural Economics from UL and currently pursues an MBA.
