Malphia Honwane, 33, is a young author from Gothenburg village outside Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga. When not writing, Honwane gets his hands full developing and shaping the education of the youth in his area through a non-profit organisation named after him. Honwane, who has been involved in the development of his community for the past 12 years, mentors youngsters in 10 villages through an annual soccer tournament, bi-annual debate competitions, motivational talks and English lessons. “I have always felt the need to reach out to people, transfer skills, share ideas, emancipate those who need help. I always strive to unearth talent, touch lives, inspire creativity and accommodate those who are neglected, particularly people from rural areas,” Honwane says. His ultimate ambition, he says, is to see youth in his area reach for the stars. “I want to give our youth an opportunity to shine and also add value to their families, communities and the world at large.”
