UN Security Council holds 2nd straw poll on secretary-general candidates
The UN Security Council held its second informal straw poll on candidates for the next UN secretary-general. Denmark's UN ambassador, Christina Markus Lassen, confirmed the poll's conclusion, stating candidates would be informed confidentially. While no details of the vote were released, it is believed all eight candidates were on the ballot, with Council members voting "encouraged," "discouraged," or "no opinion expressed."
The risks facing migrants on the journey to Europe
Hundreds of thousands of migrants undertake perilous journeys from Africa to Europe annually, often facing deadly risks across the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea. Routes are fraught with harsh conditions, violence, exploitation, extortion, arbitrary detention, kidnapping, and forced labor. The International Organization for Migration has recorded over 2,000 deaths in the Sahara since 2014, with actual numbers likely much higher due to underreporting. Many resort to smugglers, while others attempt dangerous self-organized crossings. European efforts to curb migration have inadvertently increased the demand and prices for smuggling services, making them the 'big winners'. Experts suggest expanding legal pathways and regulated labor migration as safer alternatives to reduce reliance on dangerous routes.
