At 14, Brent Peter Waldeck joined a church youth organisation of the Bethany Church of Nazarene. In 2010, aged 22, he and other church youth members founded Alpha Squad, a youth organisation based in Grassy Park, Lotus River in Cape Town, Western Cape. He became its senior youth leader and pastor. Born in Cape Town in 1989, Waldeck, 32, has a supply chain certificate and works as a procurement manager. He’s also doing a theology diploma and an accounting course. He says Grassy Park is affected by gang violence and drugs amid social discord and a lack of parental support. That’s where Alpha Squad comes in. Brent counsels the youth on issues like depression and suicide and helps them with bursary, college and job applications and to obtain driver’s licences.

God made us creative beings and we should create our own spaces and protect the peace he has given us, Waldeck says.
