Marshall Makhubo, 24, from Orlando East in Soweto, says he and his sisters grew up in a broken home where they were emotionally and physically abused. He had to find a way to blow off some steam. In 2019, Makhubo, real name Thulani Mathonsi, established Marshall Makhubo Novels, an organisation that helps fund financially struggling youth so they can publish their books and anthologies. Marshall Makhubo Novels came out of the struggles that Makhubo went through to raise R24 000 to publish his first romantic novel, Love Lies Beautiful and Ugly, and he didn’t want other budding authors to undergo a similar experience. The non-profit organisation also uses publishing to raise awareness about the scourge of gender-based violence with the release of anthology addresses to men titled Why Do We Kill Our Women and Why Are We So Bitter? “It is okay to cry and it is okay to fail. Believe in yourself no matter what,” Makhubo says.
