Singing comes effortlessly to Musawenkosi Chili. It’s a gift he willingly shares with others through choral and classical music sessions with youth in Mdeni, Soweto, where he was born and raised. Chili, 22, has been teaching choral and classical music to others since he was in matric. His musical activities, through music sessions in schools with learners or with community choirs, help give direction to youth in his community. All in all, Chili helps all his students discover the unparalleled joy of raising their voices together in harmony. “I sometimes help in churches. But due to the pandemic, that is still on hold,” says Chilli. In his music initiative, he is helped by his mentors Siphiwe Mkhatshwa, Simphiwe Mnyamana and Keutlwile Mosala. Chili would like to see classical music spread in his community and the rest of the country, and hopes for more state funding to be ploughed into classical music. “The basis of every genre of music is classical music. So, if everyone can start there, I reckon it will be easy for them to venture into other genres.”
