Gloria Thandekile Mngadi is an award-winning poet, community radio presenter, storyteller, mentor and teacher. She’s also a passionate community hero who tries her best to lead others to a better future. Born in Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal, Mngadi, 30, is the founder and executive director of the Gloria Thandekile Foundation and Ingosi Yabantwana organisation. Her foundation focuses on health and community development. Through Ingosi Yabantwana, Mngadi offers daily storytelling sessions, via WhatsApp, to help learners with isiZulu. After the outbreak of the coronavirus last year, she started a language service company to help learners with their homework, exams and tests revision – again through WhatsApp. “I was inspired by the national lockdown last year to start this educational initiative. It was disturbing to see learners from my community not being able to attend school and also failing to get access to online classes due to failing to afford data,” Mngadi says.
